Li Yifan

Li Yifan is a director, artist and curator. He was born in Wuhan, Hubei Province in 1966 and graduated from the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing in 1991. He now lives and works in Chongqing and teaches at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.

Li used to give lectures on Chinese independent film and the political reality of Chinese society in several universities in the USA, Canada, Germany, and Japan.

His documentary works Before the Flood and Chronicle of Longwang have won several international awards including the Wolfgang Staudte Award at International Forum for New Cinema of Berlinale, the SCAM International Award at the Cinema du Reel, the Robert and Frances Flaherty Prize of the YIDFF in Japan, and the Humanitarian Award of the HKIFF, as well as the IDFA Bertha Fund in the Netherlands and the Swiss Vision Sud Est Film Fund.

Li’s latest documentary We Were Smart (Shamate I Love You) has aroused great repercussions in the cultural circles at home and abroad.

His solo exhibitions include Microscopic Narration Social Images in Beijing in 2008, Resisting Hallucinations-A Ritual of Daily Life in Chongqing in 2016, and The Heretical Light in Guangdong in 2019. These exhibitions more comprehensively embody his artistic ideology of using the transcendence of reality itself to create new aesthetics under the current state of Chinese society.
