Description

Synopsis of Hei Qi (Black Paint)

The director’s father was illiterate and a rightist. He was plagued by illness in his later years. Feeling that his life is coming to an end, he returns to Hei Qi Village to meet his death. The village, which is about to disappear due to the relocation of people, is also linked to his fate.

The shadow of death reveals the other side of life, where the dead family members can get together with the living ones. As death approaches, the physical container is gradually opened, and another world of synesthesia opens up.

Highlight Endorsement

“Behind the private family images are the silent echoes of the individual and the times. It is hard not to empathize with this “black paint” when we go deeper into it.”
Laterna Magica Film Studio

“The director’s method of observing landscapes and people, which she learned from surrealism, is a bit similar to that of the Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab. Both have somewhat refreshed the way of “seeing” and presented very novel observations.”
Yin Xiang, Douban reviewer

Reasons for Recommendation

1. Over-directing empathy is actually a form of exploitation, so a film like this is a powerful retort to the “Second Uncle” video.
2. Hei Qi (Black Paint) explores the themes of death and the soul, showing the courage to face death and illness.
3. The director disrupts the conventional order of image creation and takes authorial cinema to the extreme.
