Hua Weicheng was born in Shaoyang, Hunan Province. He graduated from the School of Theater, Film and Television, Communication University of China, with a master’s degree in film studies in 2007. In 2017, he was a visiting scholar at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, in the field of video art research. He is now working in Chongqing University Meishi Film Academy as the deputy director of the Department of Art Design & Cinematography.
His creative practice, mainly through the medium of photography and documentary, focuses on the development process of urban civilization and the situation of ordinary people under the multiple pressures of political power and the logic of capital. Through encounters with “roughness”, “poverty”, “ruins”, “bacterial growth”, and “irrationality”, he aims to rebuild the connection between truth and reality.
His short film Mr.Sun’s Hotpot won the Bronze Award at the Changjiang International Photography and Video Biennale and was shortlisted in the Best Animation/Experimental Film section of the 2017 FIRST International Film Festival in Xining. Just an Alien, his first documentary feature film, was shortlisted in the Envision Competition of the 2022 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam(IDFA).
In addition, his works have been exhibited in important film festivals and institutions both at home and abroad, such as FORMAT International Photography Festival (UK), BredaPhoto Festival (Netherlands), Power Station of Art (Shanghai, China), The Kunstmuseum Bonn (Germany), Belo Horizonte International Photography Festival (Brazil), Organhaus Art Space (Chongqing, China), The Galaxy Museum of Contemporary Art (Chongqing, China). Other nominations and awards include Pingyao International Photography Festival Grant Award, Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival Discovery Award Nomination, HSBC Prize for Photography Nomination.
